Innovation and R&D in Cambridge

Biomedical discovery, semiconductor design and cleaner aviation: explore the technologies developing across Cambridge's research campuses.

Supporting innovative businesses in Cambridge and the surrounding area

Core strengths of Cambridge's innovation and R&D scene.

Biomedical research. Semiconductor design. Cleaner aviation.

What innovation is happening in Cambridge?

Cambridge connects scientific discovery with specialist facilities for engineering and clinical research. The Biomedical Campus brings hospitals, university research and industry together, while the West Cambridge site hosts computer science and the Whittle Laboratory. These examples show how innovation in the city spans living systems, computing hardware and the performance of physical machines.

A technical perspective

Meet Ardy Elansei.

Biomedical research and engineering meet in Cambridge's laboratories, devices and manufacturing processes. Ardy brings a science and technology perspective to understanding the work behind new products and processes.

Innovation in practice.

We’ve highlighted three area strengths for you to explore in detail.

01 / Biomedical science and healthcare

Connecting research with patient care

Cambridge Biomedical Campus

Cambridge Biomedical Campus places academic and industry scientists alongside NHS research hospitals and the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine. This combination supports the translation of laboratory research into clinical evaluation and healthcare practice.

The challenge: developing scientific findings into reproducible methods, treatments or diagnostic tools.

02 / Semiconductors and computer architecture

Designing the systems behind modern computing

CASCADE, University of Cambridge, West Cambridge

At Cambridge's CASCADE research centre, teams investigate computer architecture, design automation and semiconductors. Research covers processors, specialist accelerators, memory and interconnects, alongside the verification and software tools needed to make computing systems work.

The challenge: improving computing performance while managing complexity, verification and system constraints.

03 / Aerospace and energy-efficient engineering

Testing technologies for more efficient flight

Whittle Laboratory, West Cambridge

At the Whittle Laboratory on the West Cambridge site, researchers develop and test technologies for more efficient aircraft and propulsion. Current work includes electric propulsion, hydrogen fuel-cell concepts, aerodynamic design and the physical processes behind contrails.

The challenge: balancing aerodynamic, thermal and structural performance in technologies that can be built and tested.
