Innovation and R&D in Dublin

AI research, biopharmaceutical development and smart-city trials connect Dublin's universities, specialist facilities and urban neighbourhoods.

InnoFund has an office in Dublin

Core strengths of Dublin's innovation and R&D scene.

AI and digital technology. Biopharmaceutical processes. Connected city systems.

What innovation is happening in Dublin?

Dublin's innovation activity includes AI research coordinated through Trinity College Dublin, biopharmaceutical process development at NIBRT and technology trials in the Docklands. These examples span the city centre and the surrounding urban area: NIBRT is at Mount Merrion, Blackrock, County Dublin. They show distinct ways that research can become new software, better manufacturing processes or practical city services.

A technical perspective

Meet Ardy Elansei.

Dublin's software, bioprocessing and connected-city work brings different scientific and technical disciplines together. Ardy brings science and technology expertise to understanding the development behind a project.

Innovation in practice.

We’ve highlighted three area strengths for you to explore in detail.

01 / AI and digital technology

Developing AI around people and data

Trinity College Dublin and partner universities

ADAPT, coordinated by Trinity College Dublin and co-hosted by Dublin City University, researches AI-driven digital technologies across a wider university partnership. Its work in language processing, personalisation and data analytics also examines how digital systems can give people greater control, privacy and accountability.

The challenge: Making complex digital systems useful while accounting for data quality, privacy and human control.

02 / Biopharmaceutical process development

Improving how biologic medicines are made

Mount Merrion, Blackrock, County Dublin

NIBRT at Mount Merrion, Blackrock, researches how biologic medicines can be developed and manufactured more effectively. Its teams combine cell engineering, analytical science, data analysis and bioprocess engineering to address challenges in products including antibodies, vaccines and cell and gene therapies.

The challenge: Developing consistent biological products and reliable processes for manufacturing them.

03 / Smart-city systems and connectivity

Testing connected systems in the Docklands

Dublin Docklands

Smart Docklands provides a real-world setting for testing urban technologies in Dublin's Docklands, connecting the city council, researchers, businesses and local communities. Its work includes connectivity and sensor-based systems, with trials shaped around practical city challenges and public involvement.

The challenge: Testing whether connected systems meet practical city needs in real-world conditions.
