Innovation and R&D in Brighton

Creative technology, quantum research and medical imaging: explore innovation across Brighton and Hove, including the nearby Falmer campuses.

Supporting innovative businesses in Brighton and the surrounding area

Core strengths of Brighton's innovation and R&D scene.

Immersive media. Quantum technologies. Medical imaging.

What innovation is happening in Brighton?

Brighton and Hove's creative identity connects with technical research in digital media, quantum technologies and healthcare. University of Brighton projects explore new forms of storytelling, while the University of Sussex campus at Falmer hosts quantum research and the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre. The area brings creative practice and scientific development into close proximity.

A technical perspective

Meet Alexander Brenchley.

Creative technology, quantum systems and imaging all rely on demanding combinations of software and hardware. Alexander brings a software and technology perspective to explaining that development work.

Innovation in practice.

We’ve highlighted three area strengths for you to explore in detail.

01 / Creative and immersive technology

Making local stories interactive

University of Brighton and Hove Museum of Creativity

University of Brighton researchers explore immersive media, interactive storytelling and digital heritage. A local example is Double Act, a VR project about Brighton and Hove's early filmmakers, which was presented at Hove Museum of Creativity in February 2026.

The challenge: combining digital interaction, storytelling and accessible audience experiences.

02 / Quantum technologies

Developing new ways to compute and measure

University of Sussex, Falmer

At the University of Sussex in Falmer, the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies connects fundamental physics with industrial applications. Its research covers quantum computing, simulation and sensing, alongside devices, software and architectures needed to develop these technologies.

The challenge: controlling delicate physical effects while building systems that can be tested and scaled.

03 / Medical imaging and digital health

Getting more useful information from medical images

Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre, University of Sussex campus, Falmer

At Falmer, Brighton and Sussex Medical School's Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre uses MRI and other imaging methods to investigate the brain, disease and human behaviour. Current work includes ultra-low-field MRI and AI-assisted image analysis, linking medical physics with software and neuroscience.

The challenge: extracting reliable clinical and research information from complex imaging data.
